It has been 10 years since the Hanshin Earthquake.
This year, which marks the completion of the reconstruction period, is an important time to look back at the reconstruction process and clarify what has and has not been done. At the same time, moreover, we must once again thank those inside and outside the community who have helped us, and step confidently into the future, sharing our thoughts of January 17 with our global family.
The Hanshin Earthquake 10th Anniversary Commemorative Project Promotion Conference, which consists of the 10 cities and 10 towns in Hyogo prefecture that were damaged during the earthquake, NPO's and NGO's in the disaster area, public foundations, and other groups, is working with prominent groups to promote the Hanshin Earthquake Commemorative Project for this year and next under the theme "January 17 shall never be forgotten."
It's safe to say that we who live in the area struck by the earthquake are obliged to remember the more than 6,000 irreplaceable lives that were lost in a moment, and to inherit the experience and lessons of the disaster and broadcast them to the world.
"New seeds" have sprouted in the disaster-stricken area in the form of achievements such as the development of autonomous regions fostered by the reconstruction process and cooperative efforts based on the partnership of citizens and government. It is important these sprouts grow up strong and send firm roots into the earth.
To all the disaster victims I say, let's talk and confirm the experiences we've shared on this rocky road over the past 10 years and make a strong appeal for the fruits of a creative reconstruction. And along with our thanks, let's show the world how a disaster-stricken area can lead the way to a mature society.
It is my sincere hope that through diverse commemorative projects we will focus our energies on the area stricken by the earthquake and open the door to a future brimming with dreams and hope.
