Regarding the logo and symbol mark of the "Hanshin Earthquake 10th Anniversary Commemorative Project" with the theme of "January 17 shall never be forgotten" which is to be held for 2 years from April 2004, 410 works were received from all over the country in response to an open competition held from February 1 until March 1, 2004.
The (anniversary project) Promotion Conference secretariat judged these works and decided on the separately attached works as the symbol mark and logo of the "Hanshin Earthquake 10th Anniversary Commemorative Project".

I was at home in Nagoya on the day the earthquake happened. I was awakened by the longest shaking I had ever experienced. I got up at my usual time, switched on the TV and saw the news of the great earthquake. Takashi Ishida's newly married daughter and her husband were living in Takarazuka and of course encountered the earthquake, but fortunately escaped with their lives. 9 years have passed since that day. The city has recovered. However, I think scars from the earthquake still remain on the hearts of the earthquake victims.
We tried to include the message of "Don't loose heart!" when creating the design hoping that it will offer encouragement.
The "10" in the 10th Anniversary Commemorative Project was created in the image of the sun expressing brightness and energy.

I am very happy my design was chosen to be the symbol mark of this Hanshin Earthquake 10th Anniversary Commemorative Project.
At the time the earthquake happened I was away from Kobe on a school ski camp. Today, I still remember the scenes of the earthquake when I returned to Kobe, the support many people gave us later and the words of encouragement on the radio.
The "1.17" in the symbol mark is a reminder of the scenes of the disaster-stricken area, and on top of this a symbol in remembrance of the recovery and gratitude.
I am honored, through this symbol mark, to be able to participate in the 10th Anniversary Commemorative Project.
The bud sprouting full of energy from "1.17", the symbol of the disaster-stricken area, expresses the determination to work hard for the future.
