United Nations World Conference on Disaster Reduction

On December 23 last year (local time), at the 58th United Nations General Conference our country proposed a motion which was joined by 141 nations for the holding of a "United Nations World Conference on Disaster Reductionモ. The motion was carried by the entire assembly. Accordingly this became United Nations World Conference on Disaster Reduction which was held in our country in January 2005 on the 10th anniversary of the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake.

Conference Goal Based on a review of the "Yokohama Strategy and Action Plan" (1994 United Nations World Conferences on Disaster Reduction), create a new disaster reduction strategy for the 21st century to reduce the damage caused by disasters.

The establishment of the United Nations Disaster Recovery Cooperation Center
  At the United Nations World Conference on Disaster Reduction it was announced that the United Nations Disaster Recovery Cooperation Center which will act as a general office for support for disaster-stricken countries, it will also cultivate personnel, and coordinate disaster recovery and prevention measures will be established in Kobe.
