2.Features of the earthquake
| It was an earthquake of the inland - under city type that struck from north Awaji Island through Kobe City and the Hanshin district, an area with a dense population of over 3,500,000 and a center of the nation's economic activity.
Since it occurred at the relatively shallow depth of 16km, and since the fault sifted sideways, it was of the type that releases tremendous energy at once. |
3.An outline of the damage
(1) Features of the damage
| ・ |
Since it was large-scale earthquake which struck a metropolis, not only were electricity, water, gas, etc. damaged, but also the railway, super express (Shinkansen) line, highways, new transports systems and inter-city and underground railway systems were destroyed, and basic lifeline infrastructure was ruined. |
| ・ |
In areas where there was a dense concentration of old wooden houses, large numbers of house collapsed and fires broke out. Large-scale fires broke out particularly in Hyogo Ward and Nagata Ward, etc. in Kobe City. |
| ・ |
Because the earthquake struck in the densely populated Kobe-Hanshin area, it was unavoidable that large numbers of people had to live in shelters. |
